"Sweekar" is a unique multicoloured weekly newspaper of Odisha. Headquartered in Sambalpur, "Sweekar" emerged as a daily News paper in the year 1994,published and edited by Late Sarat Narayan Behera, an eminent Litterateur and Retired Asst. Director of Akashvani Kendra . But after four years of its publication, it became a weekly newspaper, due to dearth of funds. Later the publication of this newspaper was discontinued owing to rise in printing and other ancillary expenses. Afterwards in 2009 Shri Behera handed over the ownership of "Sweekar" to seasoned Journalist Hemanta Kumar Mahapatra, having a rich experience in both Odia and English Journalism. On 26th October, 2008 "Sweekar" was launched as a multicoloured weekly newspaper, under the editorship of Shri Hemanta Kumar Mahapatra. Since then, this newspaper consisting of twelve pages is being regularly published and getting popular day by day among the readers. Despite facing many difficulties, “Sweekar” has always endeavoured to maintain its neutrality. It has refrained from publishing news items which would create turmoil in the society or assassinate someone’s character. The newspaper, which was published with a motive to give a positive message to the society, has never deviated from its goal. Keeping its motive in view, “Sweekar” has never carried a single news item pertaining to any crime incident. Health benefits of various fruit and vegetables, spiritual and motivational articles are getting regularly featured in it. In addition, General Knowledge questions for children, articles authored by well-known figures from different walks of life are being published every week.
"Sweekar" has not only confined itself to a newspaper, but also organises various programmes throughout the year. The Annual Literary Meet is organised every year during the month of August- September. Apart from this Felicitation ceremony, seminars & symposiums on different topics, Workshop & Conference to revive the dying arts of Western Odisha are organised at different times.
